About Domini Hoskins Black History Museum and Learning Center

Our History

The Domini Hoskins Black History Museum & Learning Center is a museum in Redwood City, California, that showcases the contributions of African Americans through exhibits, artifacts, and memorabilia. Founded by Carolyn Hoskins, it began as a traveling exhibit to educate children and has now found a permanent home to display its extensive collection covering topics from slavery and segregation to inventions, music, and sports.

  • Mission: To educate the public about Black history and inspire visitors by highlighting the achievements of African Americans throughout history.
  • Collection: Features over 22,000 square feet of exhibits, including historical artifacts, art, music, politics, inventions, and sports memorabilia. It includes items such as JET and VIBE magazine covers, soul food menus, and art by Black artists.
  • Origin: Started by Carolyn Hoskins after her grandson, Domini, asked about other famous Black people. It began as a traveling pop-up exhibit before securing a permanent location.
  • Location: 890 Jefferson Ave; downtown Redwood City, California.
  • Activities: Hosts community events, speakers, and educational programs throughout the year.
  • Significance: The museum's existence highlights that African American history is an integral part of American history and aims to be a source of pride and education for all ages.
